Gluckist refers to a supporter of German compos- er Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714–87), who in the 1770s was feuding with his rival the Italian composer Piccini and his “Piccinists.” The Gluckists can be said to have triumphed in this musical war if one considers that Gluck’s operas are still staged today and Piccini’s aren’t even championed by a few Piccinists. |
