词源 | Bollywood. English and Hindi are the official languages of India. Among the many English words coined there is Bolly- wood, a nickname for the busy motion picture industry in Bombay. The blend word, first recorded about 1970, is pat- terned on hollywood and was meant to suggest Bombay’s ini- tial slavish imitation of Tinseltown. William Safire, in his New York Times “On Language” column (May 30, 2004) calls Bolly- wood “a 1976 coinage of the crime-fiction writer H. R. F. Keating.” |
