blunt. One of the few words meaning money in general that derives from the name of a person. Blunt, which means cash, possibly comes from the name of John Blunt, chairman of the British South Sea Company, who was a very rich man indeed. Blunt in this sense has been used by many writers, including Dickens in Oliver Twist. The obsolete historical term led to the expressions in blunt and out of blunt, to be rich or poor. A blunt is also a cigar stuffed with marijuana, the term named after the Phillies Blunt trademarked brand of cigar and first recorded in 1988. See oscar asche. |
