no-see-ems. Thoreau cites this Penobscot Indian term for small biting insects in The Maine Woods (1864). Today north- western loggers use the similar term no-see-um for the punkie, a minute, almost invisible fly or midge of the family Chironom- edae that has a terrific bite. No-see-um apparently comes from Chinook jargon or a pidgin English once spoken between log- gers and Indians. |
