词汇 | king devil weeds |
词源 | king devil weeds. In the late 19th century several European yellow-flowered hawkweeds of the genus Hieracium were inad- vertently introduced into northeastern North America. Al- though showy and handsome, they became such troublesome weeds that they were rechristened “king devil weeds.” The two worst species of them, orange hawkweed and mouse-eared (yellow-flowered) hawkweed, are regarded by experts as among the 50 worst garden weeds, but they are beautiful to behold when flowering en masse in a meadow. They are called hawk- weed because juice from their stems applied to the eyes was once thought to give humans the fabled sight of hawks. See purple crown vetch. |
