词汇 | sticky wicket |
词源 | sticky wicket. A sticky wicket is a difficult or awkward situa- tion that calls for delicate handling, and this 1920s British ex- pression still has some currency in the U.S. as a humorous term. It comes from the phrase bat at a sticky wicket, meaning to contend with great difficulties, which has its origins in crick- et. In cricket a sticky wicket (goal) literally means that the ground around a wicket is soggy because of recent, heavy rain. This condition doesn’t allow the ball to bounce well, making things difficult for the players trying to field it. |
