Part of the famous biblical la- ment for an erring, beloved son uttered by David over his son Absalom, widely praised for his brilliance and beauty (“without blemish”), who had marched against his father’s army and was killed. David’s commander, Joab, sent a messenger to David telling of his victory and his son’s death, David then crying out his anguished words: “O my son Absalom, my son, my son Ab- salom! Would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!” (Sam. 28:33). Absalom! Absalom! (1936) is the title of a novel by William Faulkner. Absalom’s death is one of the strangest in the Bible.
