词汇 would god i had died for you
词源
would God I had died for you. Part of the famous biblical la- ment for an erring, beloved son uttered by David over his son Absalom, widely praised for his brilliance and beauty (“without blemish”), who had marched against his father’s army and was killed. David’s commander, Joab, sent a messenger to David telling of his victory and his son’s death, David then crying out his anguished words: “O my son Absalom, my son, my son Ab- salom! Would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!” (Sam. 28:33). Absalom! Absalom! (1936) is the title of a novel by William Faulkner. Absalom’s death is one of the strangest in the Bible. After his defeat by his father David, he galloped off, but his long hair caught in the low branches of an oak tree, trapping him so that David’s commander Joad could kill him. An even stranger but similar death is that of Milo of Croton, who won six victories in wrestling at Olympia in 500 b.c. Milo is said to have killed a heifer with a single blow of his fist and have eaten the animal in the course of a day. He was trying to split open a tree trunk with his bare fists when his hands got caught in the falling trunk. There was no one to call for in the wilderness and he was soon devoured by a pack of wolves.
