Wrong-Way Riegels. Like wrong-way corrigan, Roy Riegels (1909–93) won fame by going the wrong way. Riegels, playing center for the University of California in the 1929 Rose Bowl, took off in the right direction on recovering a Georgia Tech fumble, but after spinning away from tacklers, he turned and ran 67 yards toward his own goal line before an alert team- mate stopped him and Georgia Tech players tackled him on the one-yard line. California tried to punt out from that terrible field position, but Georgia Tech blocked the punt for a safety and edged ahead 2–0. Both teams went on to score a touch- down (California scoring an extra point as well), but Georgia Tech’s two-point safety proved to be their margin of victory.
