词汇 | wormwood |
词源 | wormwood. Since there is nothing wormy about it, why is the herb so named? The best theory is that the “worm” in the word is from the Teutonic wer, for “man” and the “wood” from mod, the Teutonic for “courage.” By this account the word was originally wermod, meaning “man’s courage,” in reference to the herb’s supposed aphrodisiacal and healing properties. Absinthium, the classical wormwood, is an ingre- dient of absinthe, which has probably killed more people than it has sexually inspired. Tarragon is also one of the wormwoods. |
