词汇 wrestling
词源
wrestling; Pancration. Wrestling was recorded before 1100 in English, but the sport goes back to prehistoric times though differing widely in its rules and regulations. In the Olympian Games, for example, the Pancration, a brutal rough-and-tumble form of wrestling combined with boxing, allowed almost any way of defeating an opponent. This later became known as the “catch-as-catch-can” style. Today we have a variety of wrestling styles that might be called “TV wrestling” or “entertainment wrestling,” which many people take seriously. Purer forms of the sport are still widely practiced in schools and colleges, in- cluding the Greco-Roman style of ancient Rome, in which the wrestlers can’t trip, tackle, or use holds beneath the waist. The Greek philosopher Plato, whose name means “broad- shouldered” in Greek, wrestled for sport, as did Abraham Lin- coln (in some 300 matches) and George Washington, among many other notables.
