词汇 | write like an angel |
词源 | write like an angel. Isaac D’Israeli in his Curiosities of Litera- ture (1791–93) says that the phrase to write like an angel origi- nally had nothing to do with literary style, but referred to fine penmanship. According to D’Israeli (Prime Minister Disraeli’s father) a “learned Greek” named Angelo Vergecie immigrated to Italy and then to France, where his beautiful handwriting at- tracted attention; Francis I, in fact, modeled a Greek typeface on it. To write like an Angelo became synonymous with exqui- site calligraphy, and Angelo was shortened to Angel at which point the meaning was expanded to include literary style. A good story even if it can’t be confirmed. |
