词汇 | music of the spheres |
词源 | music of the spheres. Forward and backward rapt and whirled are According to the music of the spheres. —Sir John Davies, Orchestra (1596) Pythagoras taught that the spheres, or planets, made harmoni- ous sounds as they moved through space and Plato said that on each planet there sat a siren singing a sweet song that harmo- nized with the songs of all the other planets. Even further back, in biblical times, the Book of Job relates that “the morning stars sang together.” The reasoning behind the belief is that “planets move at different rates of motion . . . and must make sounds in their motion according to their different rates,” but “as all things in nature are harmoniously made, the different sounds must harmonize.” At any rate, Chaucer, Milton, and Shakespeare all believed this theory and gave expression to it in poetry, al- though the phrase music of the spheres didn’t find its way into the spoken language until the end of the 18th century. |
