It is an American term, honoring an Irishman whose first name has been lost but who may have made a tasty Irish stew. Mulli- gan, popular among American tramps, is also called slumgul- lion, or slum, the term coming into use during the American gold rush when slumgullion was originally the muddy residue remaining after sluicing gravel.
