give someone the bird. To hiss or boo someone, especially an actor; to ridicule; to give the raspberry, the Bronx cheer, the finger (meaning “fuck you”); to fire an employee. The first defi- nition goes back to the early 19th century, and bird refers to the goose, which hisses a lot. In fact, to give the goose, meaning the same, is the ancestor of to give the bird.
