give someone the bird. To hiss or boo someone, especially an actor; to ridicule; to give the raspberry, the Bronx cheer, the finger (meaning “fuck you”); to fire an employee. The first defi- nition goes back to the early 19th century, and bird refers to the goose, which hisses a lot. In fact, to give the goose, meaning the same, is the ancestor of to give the bird. The first published American use of the phrase is credited to Eugene O’Neill, who wrote in The Hairy Ape (1921): “Give him the boid, fellers—the raspberry.” See bird; the bronx
