pinch hitter. An old story has the 1905 New York Giants manager John J. McGraw using one Sammy Strang as baseball’s first pinch hitter and apparently inventing the term himself. However, this phrase—for a player who bats in a pinch for someone else—had been recorded three years earlier. The ex- pression has wide general use for any substitute or understudy in any endeavor. |
