pimp. Samuel Pepys (pronounced Peeps) was the first to record pimp, for “a procurer,” in his famous Diary (1666). The word pos- sibly derives from the French pimpant, “seductive,” which may come from the Latin papare, “to chirp.” For the unlikely connec- tion between procuring and chirping, see chippy. In Britain to- day a pimp can also be a bundle of kindling used to get a fire started. A pimping shed is simply a woodshed. In South Africa a pimp is black slang for any spy or informer, in or out of prison. |
