pillow book. Little is known about the Japanese court lady Sei Shonagon (b. 965) except that she served as lady-in-waiting to Empress Sadako and wrote The Pillow Book (Makura no Soshi), which is the first example of the Japanese genre called zuihitsu (random notes), a huge collection of notes, lists, de- scriptions, sketches, and anecdotes. Its title is probably a generic term describing an informal book of notes people recorded their thoughts in before retiring and kept in the drawers of their wooden pillows. |
