pine-tree shilling. One of the earliest coinages in America, a Massachusetts coin with a pine tree as an emblem first issued in 1652. In his story “The Great Carbuncle” (1837) Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote of “a weighty merchant and selectman . . . Master (“Ichabod”) Pigsnort [who] was accustomed to spend a whole hour after prayer time, every morning and evening, in wallowing naked among an immense quantity of pine-tree shillings.”
