pinstriper. There is no truth to the old story that the New York Yankees adopted their pinstriped uniform because it made the big-bellied Babe Ruth look thinner. The team was ac- tually wearing pinstripes years before Ruth had his problems with hot dogs, soda pop, and beer. The Yankees are sometimes referred to as the Pinstripers, though nowhere nearly so often as they are called the Yankees, Yanks, Bronx Bombers, and even the Bronx Zoo. In baseball’s early days they were first called the Highlanders and then the Hilltoppers. |
