Motown. A much-used nickname for Detroit, Michigan, a shortening of Motor Town, referring to all the cars made in America’s automobile capital. Since the 1950s Motown has also described the upbeat, pop-influenced music made by such black artists as Stevie Wonder, the Supremes, and Marvin Gaye that was first produced on records by the black-owned Tamla Motown label in Detroit. This music is often called the “Mo- town sound.” |
