VE Day; VJ Day. Both these designations were coined by U.S. director of war mobilization James F. Byrnes in the same 1944 speech. He called the eventual date of Germany’s surrender “VE Day,” Victory in Europe Day; and designated Japan’s even- tual surrender as “VJ Day,” Victory over Japan Day. VE Day came the next year on May 8, 1945, and VJ Day, the end of World War II, came on September 2, 1945. |
