vendetta. Vendetta is used loosely to describe the sworn vengeance of anyone against another person, but the word, which comes from Latin vindicta, “vengeance,” and dates back at least two centuries, strictly means vengeance against the murderer of a person in one’s family, requiring the murder of that murderer. This blood vengeance and feuds based on it are common in Sicily and Corsica. |
