词汇 | kafkaesque |
词源 | Kafkaesque. Franz Kafka’s three novels (The Castle, The Trial, and the unfinished Amerika) and his short stories are charac- terized by the surreal distortion and sense of impending doom in a nightmarishly impersonal world that define this word. Kafka, an Austrian born in Prague, died of tuberculosis in 1924 when only age 40. Believing that he had failed in his life’s work, the author’s last request was for his friend Max Brod to burn all his papers and unpublished manuscripts. Brod refused to do this, rationalizing that Kafka did not really want it done or he would not have asked someone he must have known would never do such a thing. Instead, Brod published Kafka’s im- mensely influential writings. First recorded in The New Yorker in 1947, the adjective Kafkaesque is frequently heard today. |
