kaiser. Like czar, kaiser too derives from the surname of Gaius Julius Caesar, being merely the German word for caesar. Kaiser was the title of the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and the emperors of Germany and Austria. The word has less of a stigma attached to it than czar. Another title for a ruler of- ten attributed to Caesar is shah. Shah, however, actually derives from a Sanskrit word, meaning “dominion.” |
