✓ (checkmark). As far back as the 17th century teachers were for some unknown reason using the checkmark (✓) to mean “correct.” The word check is much older, deriving ultimately from the Persian shah, for “king,” which became the check in the game of chess and, from its use in the game, was widely trans- ferred to other meanings in English.
