词汇 | zip code |
词源 | zip code; zip. The zip in zip-code is an acronym for zone im- provement plan, an acronym that was invented to convey the idea of speed—zip! The system and name for it were introduced by the U.S. Post Office in 1963. The actual inventor of the code was postal employee Robert A. Moon (1918–2000), who first submitted his idea in 1944 but waited almost 20 years to see it accepted. Mr. Moon’s contribution consisted of the first three digits of the zip code—those referring to the general regions of the U.S. The last two digits—identifying smaller delivery areas—are credited to others. At the time of his death Mr. Moon was said to be working on a zip code plan for interplane- tary mail. |
