freewheeling. A freewheeling person is one who moves about freely, independently, one who might even be irresponsi- ble, or someone who isn’t governed by rules and regulations. The term comes from bicycling in the old days before the coaster brake was invented, when cyclists coasted, freewheel- ing down the hills. The term freewheeler for a bicycle is first re- corded in 1889. |
