词汇 hero sandwich
词源
hero sandwich; poor boy. New York City’s Italian hero sandwiches, the term first recorded in the 1920s, are named for their heroic size, not for Charles Lindbergh or any specific hero of the Roaring Twenties. Hero sandwiches are surely among the most numerous-named things in English. Syno- nyms include such terms as hoagies (in Philadelphia), sub- marines or subs (in Pittsburgh and elsewhere), torpedos (Los Angeles), wedgies (Rhode Island), wedges (New York State), bombers (New York State), Garibaldis (Wisconsin), Cuban sandwiches (Miami), Italian sandwiches (Maine), Italians (Midwest), grinders (New England), spuckies (pronounced “spookies”; Boston), rockets (New York State), zeps or zeppe- lins (several states), and poor boys (New Orleans), though this last one is made with French instead of Italian bread and can feature oysters. Blimpie is a trade name for a similar sandwich, and Dagwood refers to any huge sandwich—after “Blondie” comic strip character Dagwood Bumstead’s mid- night snack creations. That’s 20 in all—and there must be more!
