词汇 | hernia |
词源 | hernia. The protrusion of an organ through an opening in its surrounding walls, especially the abdominal walls. The word comes ultimately from Latin for a rupture, which is akin to Latin hira, gut. In writing an article about Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, British author J. C. Squire (1884– 1958) found that Hermia (the name of the young heroine in the play) was spelled Hernia in the proofs of the article. He let the mistake stand, inserting an asterisk and the note: “I cannot bring myself to interfere with my printer’s first fine careless rupture.” |
