hermaphrodite. One who has the reproductive organs and many of the secondary sex characteristics of both sexes; and by extension, anything that is a combination of disparate elements. The word derives from Hermaphroditus of Greek mythology, the son of Hermes (a personification of the male principle) and Aphrodite (Hermes’ female counterpart). In the Greek myth Hermaphroditus became united in one body with the young and beautiful nympth Salmacis, the nymph of the fountain in which he bathed. |
