hermit’s derby. This is an interesting British expression, with limited American use, for “an upset victory.” Hermit was the long shot that won the English derby at Epsom Downs in 1868, his victory all the more memorable because the marquis of Hastings lost his entire fortune betting on the favorite—to the great pleasure of Hermit’s owner, Henry Chaplin, whose fian- cee had eloped with Lord Hastings not long before the race.
