flourish. An old euphemism for the sex act used by Virginia tobacco planter, author, and colonial official William Byrd, who kept a secret diary in shorthand as an avocation, never intend- ing for it to be published. He had no inhibitions about married love, judging by his entry for July 30, 1710: “In the afternoon my wife and I had a little quarrel which I reconciled with a flourish. Then she read a sermon in Dr. Tillitson to me. It is to be observed that the flourish was performed on the billiard table.” |
