词汇 | squeeze play |
词源 | squeeze play. The squeeze play, or squeeze play bunt, or sui- cide squeeze, is said to have been invented by two Yale Univer- sity baseball players in 1897, but wasn’t consciously used much or widely known until the 1905 major league season. It con- sists of a batter trying to “squeeze in” a run by laying down a bunt in a no-out or one-out situation when there is a runner on third base. The runner breaks toward home plate with the pitch and the batter tries to place the bunt in a spot from which the fielder can’t throw the runner out at the plate. Squeeze play in American English also means to apply pres- sure on a person in order to gain an advantage or force com- pliance; this expression is possibly influenced by the baseball term. See also bunt. |
