He earned as much as $1 million a picture (making him the youngest self-made millionaire in history). But he was never given more than a $6.50 weekly allowance before he le- gally came of age. In 1935, Coogan sued his parents for the millions he had earned, but though he won in court, there was apparently only about $125,000 left for him to retrieve—barely enough to pay his legal expenses. Coogan died in 1984. His outrageous fleecing resulted in the passage of the 1939 Coogan Act, which protects child performers by empowering the courts to put in trust a large percentage of their earnings while they are minors.
