词汇 stage mother
词源
stage mother. Stage mothers (and fathers) have too often supported their own bank accounts and egos rather than the child actors they dragged by the collar to stardom. The term apparently dates back to early movie days. “My mother was the stage mother of all time,” Judy Garland said in one of her last television interviews. “She really was a witch. If I had a stomachache and didn’t want to go on, she’d say, ‘Get out on that stage or I’ll wrap you around a bedpost!’ ” There were many stage mothers even worse. Jackie Coogan’s mother, Lil- lian, was the most historically important among them, along with his stage father, Arthur Bernstein. Jackie was one of the most popular child stars of all time—best known for his star- ring role in Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid (1921) when he was only seven. He earned as much as $1 million a picture (making him the youngest self-made millionaire in history). But he was never given more than a $6.50 weekly allowance before he le- gally came of age. In 1935, Coogan sued his parents for the millions he had earned, but though he won in court, there was apparently only about $125,000 left for him to retrieve—barely enough to pay his legal expenses. Coogan died in 1984. His outrageous fleecing resulted in the passage of the 1939 Coogan Act, which protects child performers by empowering the courts to put in trust a large percentage of their earnings while they are minors.
