S.S. Minnow. The name of the ship in the television comedy Gilligan’s Island, a yacht that was wrecked in a typhoon on an uncharted tropical island, leaving first mate Gilligan and his fellow castaways to fend for themselves while awaiting rescue. The late Bob Denver (1935–2005) played the wacky, bumbling Willy Gilligan, whose first name was rarely used, and the show’s 98 episodes, beginning in 1964, became cult classics over the years. At the time Gilligan’s was thriving on TV, Federal Com- munication Commissioner Newton N. Minow pronounced prime-time television “a vast wasteland.” Avenging the insult, Gilligan’s executive producer Sherwood Schwartz named the little ship the S.S. Minnow.
