Stage Door Canteen. Probably the only “nightclub” celebrat- ed in a song—Irving Berlin’s “I Left My Heart at the Stage Door Canteen”—is the Stage Door Canteen that the United Service Organization (USO) and American Theater Wing ran during World War II in the basement of Broadway’s 44th Street Theat- er. This was the first USO canteen in the country. Admission was free to all armed forces personnel, and Broadway players performed there gratis, danced with the GIs, and even waited on tables. The New York Stage Door Canteen was featured in several movies, as was its counterpart in Hollywood. |
