Squanto. The Pawtuxet Indian who lived with and befriended the Plymouth colonists from 1621 until he died in 1622, show- ing them the best fishing and hunting places and teaching them how to plant corn, among other things. Squanto, also called Tisquantum, may have visited England two times before meet- ing the Pilgrims. It is certain that British Captain Thomas Hunt kidnapped him in 1615 and that he lived in England for four years before being returned to America. The names of other In- dians who helped the colonists include Samoset, who intro- duced Squanto to them, and Chief Massasoit, who made a peace pact with them. |
