squaw; squawman. The offensive term squaw for a Native American woman, or any wife or woman, derives from Algo- nquian squa, “young woman or wife.” This is innocent enough, but squaw has had an insulting, degrading connotation almost from the first time it was recorded in 1634. The same can be said about the offensive word squawman, a white man who marries an Indian woman, which was first printed two centu- ries later in 1866. |
