Fleshy School of Poetry. The poet and painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti was viciously attacked from a moral point of view by the poet Robert Buchanan in an article in the Contemporary Review called “The Fleshy School of Poetry.” Published in Oc- tober 1871 under the pseudonym Thomas Maitland, the article accused Rossetti, Swinburne, William Morris, and several oth- ers of being decadent, morally irresponsible, and obsessed with the sensual and carnal. The piece created great controversy, Swinburne replying at length to the charges in his Under the Microscope (1872), and Rossetti, who got the brunt of the criti- cism, never really recovering from it. His tendency toward gloomy brooding increased, he avoided people, overused nar- cotics, and became paranoid enough for friends to fear for his sanity. Rossetti died in 1882 at age 54. See snark.
