Dreyfusard. Any defender of French army officer Major Alfred Dreyfus (1859–1935), convicted of treason in 1894 and acquitted in 1905 after serving time on hellish Devil’s Island. Dreyfus’s greatest defender was author Émile Zola, who in 1898 wrote the famous article “J’accuse.” Dreyfus was eventually cleared by the supreme court of appeals, was decorated with the Legion of Honor, and promoted to general. |
