词汇 | drink off dead nelson |
词源 | drink off dead Nelson. To drink alcohol copiously and in- discriminately. Lord Horatio Nelson, England’s greatest naval hero, was killed at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805, and his body was brought back to England for burial. The fabled hero became the subject of many legends, including one claiming that his body was brought home preserved in rum. This led to the British slang expression Nelson’s blood for rum and the Canadian expression recorded here, used mainly in Newfoundland. |
