词汇 | dray |
词源 | dray; drey. Dray, sometimes still spelled in its obsolete form drey, refers to a squirrel’s nest, but I have also seen the word used as a collective noun for squirrels (“A dray of bushy-tails darted across the lawn.”). More specifically, according to Rich- ard E. Mallery’s estimable Nuts About Squirrels (2000), a “dray” is a squirrel’s nest of “bundled leaf structures that protect them from weather conditions.” First recorded in 1607, the word dray’s origin is unknown, and it is not included in any of the major dictionaries, nor any reference book I checked excepting Mallery’s fine work. See squirrel. |
