Drambuie. Bonnie Prince Charlie (Charles Edward Stuart, 1720–80), the Young Pretender to the British throne, led the 1745 Jacobite uprising and had to flee Scotland when it was suppressed. The Young Chevalier, as he was also called, made a gift of the secret recipe for his royal liqueur to John Mackin- non, who had helped him escape, as the old story goes. Bonnie Prince Charlie’s recipe wasn’t made commercially by the Mackinnon clan for nearly another century and a half, but it quickly became popular worldwide when it was. It had been named by the Mackinnons from the Gaelic dram, drink, and buidheach, pleasing or satisfying.
