Several respected sources mark the origin of sleaze “unknown.” But this word meaning contemptibly low, mean, or disreputable may have originally been a derogatory reference to shoddy fabrics made in Siberia. At least folk etymology has it so. When first recorded in about 1635, sleazy did refer to cheap flimsy fabric. |
