词汇 | sissy |
词源 | sissy. In the mid 19th century sissy was merely a synonym for sister and it is still used as a nickname for girls, as is Sis. But by about 1890 the Americanism took on the meaning of a boy who acts like a girl, a coward or weakling. The word, as de- meaning to women as it is to men, finally came to include among its derogatory definitions “a male homosexual,” espe- cially in the form sissy-boy. |
