dirty word. A taboo word, an obscenity. The U.S. term is first recorded in about 1835 and its extended meaning is applied to anything considered unmentionable or reprehensible, as in “His name is a dirty word.” What is a dirty word, of course, de- pends on the mind or heart of the beholder or listener. A fa- mous list of dirty words is American comedian George Carlin’s radio comedy routine about seven dirty words that are prohib- ited on the air. The FCC banned Carlin’s “Seven Dirty Words” and was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court, which deemed the words indecent but not obscene. The Indecent Seven are fuck, shit, cunt, cocksucker, piss, tits, and motherfucker.
