mauve. British scientist William Perkin discovered the color mauve in 1856 while experimenting with the coal tar compo- nent aniline in an attempt to produce clear quinine. Mauve, “a moderate grayish violet to moderate reddish purple,” was so named by Perkin after the French name of the mallow plant— he just happened to like the word mauve, which sounded quite sophisticated to an 18-year-old. The color became widely popu- lar after Queen Victoria wore it to a royal wedding. The Mauve Decade (1926) by Thomas Beer is a study of American life dur- ing the last part of the 19th century. |
