stalking horse. Hunters of old sometimes trained their horses to walk toward their quarry while the hunters remained hidden behind them until the game was within shooting range. Such horses were called stalking horses in the 16th century; it wasn’t long before a stalking horse came to mean a sham politi- cal candidate used to conceal the candidacy of a more impor- tant figure in order to draw votes from a rival, or anything put forth to mask plans, a pretext. |
