Hempe, he ex- plained, is an acrostic, a word formed from the first letters of the names of five of England’s rulers: Henry, Edward, Mary with Philip, and Elizabeth. When the last one of them, Eliza- beth, died in 1603—when Hempe was spun, or finished—Eng- land was done, for the new king, James, was not called king of England, but the king of Great Britain and Ireland.
