Fosbury Flop. American high jumper Dick Fosbury (b. 1947) won a gold medal and broke the world record for the high jump in the Mexico City 1968 Olympics using this unorthodox headfirst-over-the-bar technique. Ira Berkow in the New York Times (3/23/02) described a meeting with him many years later: “At first glance, it was remarkable to see Dick Fosbury enter the Manhattan hotel restaurant Friday perpendicular to the ground, rather than horizontal. If you’ve never seen Dick Fos- bury before, all you have to go on are the old photos of him soaring over the high-jump bar headfirst, like a falcon in flight except upside down, with that inspired, innovative technique that would be laughed about but widely imitated to this day and that would come to be known as the Fosbury Flop.” Fos- bury began working on the technique in high school.
